Sanduni Bathing House

Would you go to a tour to a bath house? Sure, if the Banya is called “Sanduni”. You haven’t seen Moscow if you haven’t been to this place. What can be more authentically Russian than a “Banya”?!

Sanduni is a banya with history, located in the very centre of Moscow. This architectural miracle is still functioning as a banya complex and only one afternoon a week, when there is no actual banya it is possible to visit this place with a tour.

The historical bath complex has preserved to this day magnificent interiors of the late XIX century. The history of this place is full of legends still popular amongst Muscovites.

The male department is considered to be the decoration of Sanduni Bathing House, or, better say «Bathing Palace» 🙂  In addition to a spacious common hall in Gothic style, there is a cozy Turkish hall with elaborate patterns or an ancient swimming pool made in the late empire style. It is there, in the preserved historical interiors in the Roman and Moorish styles, luxurious rococo and mysterious Gothic, that the spirit of the past hovers.

You will learn the story about the foundation of Sanduni baths, about their creators and consecutive owners. You understand the difference between each branch of the baths — their purpose, architecture and stylistics of the interiors. You will hear about the famous Sanduni visitors and about films that were shot in these legendary walls.

  • Why the baths are called «Sandunovsky”?
  • Who founded the famous Sandunov Baths?
  • What is the specifics of the Russian steam in the banya?
  • Why and how bachelorette parties were held in the baths?

After the tour you will know the answers to these and many other curious questions.
