The Nutcracker is a two-act ballet with music by Tchaikovsky. The ballet was adapted from Hoffmann’s original story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King”. Premièring in 1892 in St. Petersburg, the original production was not initially a hit, however it has been enormously popular in the last 50 years.
The Nutcracker has become one of Tchaikovsky’s most famous compositions and is noted for its use of the celesta, an upright keyboard instrument that looks like a piano and sounds like a soft glockenspiel. Its name is derived from the French for ‘heavenly’. The instrument figured prominently in the Dance of the Sugar Plum fairy.
The Nutcracker performed by the Moscow Bolshoi Ballet on the Historic Stage is one of the greatest classics in the world. With iconic music by Tchaikovsky, and enchanting sets and beautiful costumes, this stunning tale explores the universal themes of love, power and evil.
